Quick tip for you today about late fees.
For most bills, if you miss the due date, you get whacked with a late fee as soon as the clock chimes midnight the following day.
But did you know? If you ask nicely, they may just waive it for you.
I know when you’re feeling a little shaky about your finances, the tendency can be to blame yourself and take the punishment. “Well, I was late, so I guess I have to pay the late fee.”
But it isn’t so. You just have to ask.
Call them up. Say:
“Hi! I am so sorry but I was [on vacation / crazy at work / some other human reason] this week and I completely forgot to pay my bill. I’m about to pay it right now.
“I see that a $25 late fee was assessed and I was wondering if you’d be willing to waive that for me as a courtesy, as well as any interest charges?”
Chances are, if this is the first time you’ve asked this year, they’ll say, “No problem, I’ve already gone ahead and taken care of that for you. You should see it as a statement credit in 5-7 business days. If you see any interest charges, just give us a call back and we’ll get those taken care of, too.”
Yes, my lovely, it is THAT EASY.
Of course, you want to pay your bills on time! But life happens. And companies can be nicer about it than you think. This five minute phone call may mean at least $25 back in your pocket. (That’s a rate of $300 an hour!)
Stand up for yourself and just ASK. The worst they can say is no.
If you’re reading this and thinking, “This doesn’t apply to me because I just put everything on auto pay so I never make late payments!” …good on you if that’s your jam! Here’s how this applies:
When your bills are on autopay, the temptation to ignore them is great and powerful. Like Oz. So no late fees, but other fees and charges may slip by unnoticed.
If you’re an auto-payer, you can still stand up for yourself. Review your recent activity diligently. Call to contest or question late charges, fees, and anything else in your account you don’t recognize.
How can you stand up for yourself when it comes to your money? What will you ASK about?
